MONO meets the artist. An experimental initiative that makes you think beyond objects
Hand-made design nowadays is a welcome alternative for those seeking a distinctive and original product handcrafted by an artisan. You can own a machine-made, digitally crafted replica or a one of a kind that is imperfect, tactile and unique. It’s a matter of choice. MONO art & design is supporting the idea of the maker movement that has now reached the Budapest art scene and is providing a platform for young talents. That is where the basic idea of capturing the essence of the design process came from.
“MONO meets the artist” is an experimental project of a kind, which is rooted in several inspirational sources. First and foremost the project was driven by personal motivation, the appreciation towards their designers’ products, as well as the beauty of the design process. On the other hand the initiative itself that they create their own creative content was one of the goals besides promoting Hungarian design at large – just as the concept-store-slash-gallery does. The short documentary visualizes the process of the creation, celebrates the originality and quality of the products, so does it intend to reflect the passion each of the work carries, like they had a soul.
The creative team behind also aimed to highlight the importance of storytelling when creating a brand identity. Essentially, it is a quiet rebellion against mindless mass production and loving contribution to supporting local goods. It includes many designers that have started their brands while being enrolled at MOME. For instance AGNESKOVACS whose bags are made of one single leather card by folding and bending and then fixed by sewing, or DEZKA, Hungary’s first mini cruiser brand, which is an exciting transition between fashion and urban skateboarding lifestyle… The film is sort of an acknowledgement on the occasion of MONO art & design’s one-year-existence.
